Europe this Summer and the Tour de France
Summer is coming in the Northern Hemisphere and people around the world are already planning their holidays in the sun. Europe this summer is not all about beaches, museums or famous cities. People traveling to Europe also go to festivals and special events. For example, millions of tourist are getting ready to travel to France in July for the legendary Tour de France.
The Tour de France starts in the city of Dusseldorf (Germany) on the 1st of July and ends on the Champs-Élysées in Paris, France, on the 27th of July. This cycling event is perhaps the toughest sports challenge of all. Each year, millions of people follow the route and travel to the many destinations along the way to see the cycling champions whizz past.
Just how big of an event is the Tour de France? Here are some numbers for you to consider:
- 1200 hotel rooms are reserved each night exclusively for the teams, staff, press and tour personnel, for the entire month of July.
- Some 2000 journalists attend and report on the Tour event.
- About 15 million people watch the Tour de France take place live each year

And, another example. When the U.K. hosted the Tour in 2007, almost two million people turned out over two days. Furthermore, the Tour contributed an estimated £88 million to the British economy. Those are very impressive numbers!
